Kate Flake

Kate Flake is an artist based in Athens, Ga and received her BFA from the University of Georgia in 2013. She is inspired by texture, pattern, and repetitive marking making, whether it be pencil ticks or crochet stitches. She makes books, prints, drawings, and fiber works.

I love the small things, the small repetitive marks and actions that are simple up close but massively complex when looked at from a far. The smallest and simplest units, whether they be tick marks, stitches, atoms, or cells, can be manipulated and varied to create intricate systems. In my work I use variation and repetition to create such systems.

I am also interested in the interplay of systems and the environment and how each informs the other. Light is the primary factor I use to manipulate my work. When in the presence of light, white cut paper forms are enhanced by shadows that interplay with the solid white form of the paper. With the addition of light, shadows and paper form unexpected connections in a controlled chaotic whole.
