Caroline Furr's small show, "floating world," in the similarly tidy gallery 110 CHURCH, provides a glimpse into her contemporary version of Japanese Edo-period ukiyo-e, or "Pictures of the Floating World" woodblock prints. I saw no signs of the kind of red-light district activity that appeared in the 17th-century works, but they could easily be hidden.
Furr's collages and gouaches on panel board - and combinations of the two - suggest Chinese and Japanese landscape painting, too, but as seen through a surrealist's lens. Dorothea Tanning and Leonore Carrington would seem to be her touchstones.
