Ella Sayre

I am a student in the Modern American Poetry class at Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virginia. My class worked on these books with visiting artist Wendy Wolf. Modern American Poetry is co-taught by Molly W. Pugh and Elizabeth Vorlicek and combines the study of poetry, from the Modernist era, with the studio practice of making artist’s books.

RiTUAL - Ella Sayre, Episcopal HIgh School

My book on ritual shows the independence of “sustainable”, day-to-day, rituals combined with the artistic ritual of making a book. The excerpts from different poems on either page shows the inspiration for great artistic and imaginative discovery through daily tasks and the middle section shows night time alluding to the bodily need for sleep and meditation, fueling the imaginative process of dreams or visions. The duality in my life and my artistic expression is exemplified within my book.
